I bought a used M42 lens from UK and it smells like a somali. AAA++++ serviced and cleaned my ass, focusing was noisy, rough and dry as sahara. Atleast no visible oil, fungus or bad scratches like promised.
Even if it's from a camera shop it may have been stored in a smoker home or something else but all I know it smells.
I wiped it with a damp cloth and left it outside in 0°C for the evening to get rid of the smell. Returning is more hassle than it's worth at under 100 bucks.
So is it cool to leave a lens outside for the night and every day until it stops smelling?
I will be carrying it whole day tomorrow outside anyway.
Putting the lens in a box with baking soda or what the odour lessening thing is next or does that invite dust inside the lens?
When buying from Eastern-Europe the lenses only smell like storage grease, not any human smells, yuck once again.
