It's not a huge deal but it does slow things down and I don't want people to think that I will recompose every shot to avoid getting that one violinist in the photo.
Should I just tell them that none of this matters legally? Here in Australia there are very few privacy laws. As long as you are on public land, you are fair game for photography; the only exceptions being creepshots and obscenity. Do people repeatedly ask for permission like this in other countries?
I understand doing this out of courtesy to shy musicians but some of the staff genuinely seem to think they are at some sort of legal risk and I think they'd be better off just not saying anything.
