I was thinking about this the other day: we italians live next to beauties that the whole world envies us, and that millions of people every year come to see, but we end up giving them for granted. It's extremely hard to look at them with different eyes, in the same way that it's extremely hard to be a tourist in your own city. It might be a bit insulting to all those that live in copy-paste suburbs, but in the end it's the same kind of mental mechanism at work.
