The Sony pancake kit is rather mediocre, but the 20mm pancake prime is considerably better than the x100 lens.
You might also wanna look at the Fuji interchangeable bodies. The X-T1 is down to $800, and as long as you avoid the Fuji 18mm and 35mm f1.4 you will be fine with any prime you choose. The X-T1 is larger than the x100 though. It is actually roughly as large as the a7 bodies.
I have personally been considering an X-A5 for the wife. Simple, compact, bayer sensor, and comes in a cute pink too.
