I was wary of it too since most of my DSLR kit was manual focus for about 10 years, but since the AF system is quite capable once you get a feel for it I've almost never felt the need to kick it into manual. Pic related is the only time I can recall in 2 years that the AF system couldn't figure out what to do and I fell back on MF. And since you're still going around in circles instead of side-to-side or buttons the motion itself feels fairly natural and it gives a lot of very fine control as there's a lot of "resolution" in that spinner.
