If you want to see for yourself how far you can get with The One You Have With You™, knock yourself out. If you want an image someone else may be interested in looking at though, a snapshit of the gathered crowd stands a better chance.
So turn you back to the eclipse and capture the wonder on the face of some elementary schooler, figure out how the sun's position in the sky would fit in a decent landscape/cityscape shot, make a timelapse of your dog sleeping through the whole thing, the eclipse barely visible through a window in the background, whatever. If it ends up shit, at least it's not the exact same shit image 10.000 other people also took.
