anyway I've largely got my life back together again but whole stint was 4 years. Love my Pentax to death too.

I just suck it up and carry a DSLR. I know it's annoying for long hikes and climbing, etc, but I just deal with it because it's important to me. Pentax is my suggestion as they have excellent weather sealing even in their base models so you can be out in the rain, dust, sand etc without having to worry. Also Pentax cameras are rated for sub-freezing operation which almost no other DSLR any few compacts can say.
