But they are surrounded by stacks and stacks of photos that don’t. Ie, it’s not the “photos that look like happy accident snapshots, but consistently across his whole portfolio”. It’s literally that he goes out and takes snapshots and gets the occasional happy accident. There’s one, maybe two good shots per portfolio.
He doesn’t engineer his images to fit into the “lucky accident snapshot” aesthetic. He doesn’t engineer his images AT ALL. There are at least two documentaries on Eggleston on YouTube and I’ve watched them both several times and they include snippets of video of him actually taking photos. He doesn’t take any time to consider his composition. Something catches his eye and he clicks the button and moves on. He never takes a second shot.
