The K-1 was a gift to the fans, who've always wanted a digital full frame to stick their film full frame lenses on. By that point, Pentax's digital line-up was strictly APS-C and they placed the K-1 as a sort of premium offering. So you'll notice various tiers of APS-C cameras, and then just one really nice full-frame.
Coming from Nikon, Canon, or Sony, you might be thinking what the hell is wrong with this company. Well, Pentax ain't like those companies. They develop one camera at a time and release lenses just as slowly. That's just how they roll. Some things they're known for is amazing ergonomics, extremely rugged weather sealing, a pentaprism in every model even in the lowest-end, they can mount and operate legacy K-mount glass, and sometimes just really weird experimental stuff. They have two different premium lens series, star-series and limited, the Pentax shooter enjoys this sort of thing.
Speaking of which, Pentax shooters are extremely rare. I personally have never seen a Pentax camera in public. They have simply adapted to live with that kind of market segment. Ricoh turned out to be a great fit for them in that respect, things have settled down since. If you're expecting Pentax to start playing the same game that Sony is playing, then y'all just setting yourselves up for disappointment.
