Regarding the atmospheric distortions: I shot dozens of shots. Then stitched together the sharp bits. The difference between shots is quite noticeable. One crater is sharp in one photo than the other in the next.
Call me old fashioned but doing it manually seemed to work for me. Auto stacking can ruin an image imo. Sometimes you get a little window of clarity.
Where I live it's almost impossible to do deep sky. Pic related is a piss poor capture of M42.
