The 24-105 has surprisingly smooth bokeh for a zoom and renders the DOF transition a lot more smoothly. Is sharpness worth throwing away a sweeping (and well loved) genre of photographic compositions with harsh, semi-geometric bokeh with strong outlines in every specular highlight? Spectacular sharpness is only relevant to people who aggressively crop or print 20x30 and up.
