do you ever use a black background to take the photo when you actually want to edit it to a white background like for ecommerce product photography? obviously if the item is white, a white background might make for contrast issues. but like if the item is a medium color, maybe you want a darker background to avoid the washing out effect of the surrounding light that would bounce from the background etc? is there a rule of thumb, common wisdom or is it just a "be yourself" kind of thing that everyone has to figure out themselves because people have different preferences or don't want to give away their secrets?
