I've decided to upgrade to fool frame, but I haven't quite decided what to get for my tele zoom.
The Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 really caught my eye. But I'm shooting mainly landscapes at f/8 or f/11, so most of the potential of the fast lens would be wasted. Still, it would be nice to have for the odd portrait or if some wildlife pops out where I can't use too long shutter speeds. But that's not really my focus for photography.
So maybe I'd really be better off with a Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 which is cheaper, lighter and has more reach. But those savings will be quickly eaten up if I decide to get something like a fast 85mm prime to cover the aforementioned sporadic needs, in which case I'd be worse off yet for cost. At least I wouldn't have to lug a heavy f/2.8 up every mountainside. Still, I would miss the gap from 70-100mm. I used to shoot crop with a kit 18-55 and a cheap 70-300mm, and some of my favorite images were taken either pinned at 55mm or 70mm with one lens or the other, so I seem to be attracted to that gap. I'm less concerned with missing out on 200-400mm, since most of my old images from the equivalent crop range are kind of meh. If I really end up missing the range I can always get a teleconverter for the f/2.8.
I'd also lie if I said there wasn't a tiny gearfag inside of me who would find the classic trinity lens pretty gratifying to use. Even more so the native Canon 70-200mm f/2.8, but that's really stretching the budget.
Any advice?
