I just bagged my dream job against all odds, and part of how I want to reward my hard work over the last year is to get a really nice film camera. I have a canon P I like a lot, but really want a second rangefinder body I can use my 50mm on (I use the canon P mostly for 35mm sunny 16, because I like the 1x magnification with both eyes open, super easy to frame and I almost don’t need the frame lines.)
I’d like to get a camera with a good meter, and potentially AE lock. I once wanted an M3, but really that’s super gear hoarding, since it does nothing more than the P. I’ve narrowed it down to:
- Leica M6 TTL .85x
- Leica M7 .85x
- Zeiss Ikon ZM
I’m going to try out the first two at a Leica store next week, but I will say I really want a nice hefty camera, since I love the weight of the Canon P in my hand and hear the ZI is way too light. I also destroyed a Canon P recently by dropping it on the floor — I want a model that can handle my goofiness for a decade.
Red pill me please — I’m really leaning towards an M7, but that price tag is really quite hefty. If it means I get another 5-10 years of use before it’s unserviceable though it’s worth it.
