I think what makes the d500 sensor alot better is the signal to noise ratio, especially at higher ISO
with my d5600, shooting above 1600 iso was pretty sketchy, 3200 felt pretty unusable
the grain on the d500 was much more pleasing
also the d500 is a 'sports/action' focused camera so 20mp is kindof the sweetspot between resolution and file size so the camera doesnt slow down when shooting at 10fps w/ a fast memory card
