White gives it extra separation, and is actually very useful when viewed on a dark theme of 4chan. Dark corners would be less pronounced without it. Although, 4chans brighter themes aren't so bad when it comes to framing, as long as a photo like that isn't starter of the thread.
Then you have second photo. Better one of them, but frame is practically ruining it. Obviously, it's framed such for instagram, it's restricting design, and need for standing out as a thumbnail. Put on 4chan, it doesn't work in any theme. Top and bottom are cut off unnaturally, and two white towers on each side of the photo are positively offensive. It's hard to even call them a frame. So you have, effectively, just lighter grey frame that's acting as a primarily frame.
