As someone who is a 35mm shooter I think it's a down right horrible focal length for portraits, the backgrounds look messy even when the lens is stopped all the way down. If the image shot with the 35mm of Molly was shot with a 50mm but framed exactly the same as the 35mm shot it would look better. See pic related the 50mm shot looks better. But with that being said I think anything tighter than 50mm just looks boring and artificial, while anything wider than 50 distorts subject. 50mm is just that sweet spot.
