There are definitely monthly plans you can sign up for. Be prepared to show your visa as places are quite hesitant signing over plans without proof of you being in the country for the duration of the plan. Also be aware that unless you sign up on the first of the month, you may get suckered into an extra month. I was with DoCoMo, but don't think they do monthly plans. Definitely make sure your phone is unlocked prior to coming.
