>>3652767Only used an EVF but that's been my experience as well. A shallow DoF creates a more obvious line between what's in and out of focus. Rather than looking at your subject and watching it fall in and out of focus, you can watch the focal plane shift back and forth and just feel in your hands how far you have to move it.
The technique I use is to "feel" how much movement puts the subject from out of focus one way to out of focus the other way, then move half that distance.
This isn't precise enough to get perfect portrait eye focus but it's fine for anything bigger with some practice.
You could try focusing with the aperture wide open and then stopping down. Kind of a pain but you should eventually get good enough to focus with any DoF
