I've used a Nikon B500 ($250), a Kodak Pixpro ($130~ at Walmart), both of which had "40x" zoom lenses. And a Nikon D5500 with a 30-700mm lens ($495, two lenses included, used, ebay) to photograph birds casually in my spare time. The first two I used for a house photography job where photo quality didn't matter and I'd photograph birds in my spare time. The latter I bought specifically to photograph birds and thunderstorms.
The B500 was decent for a digital camera, took this photo of a rather distant bird in a nest,

The Kodak Pixpro is absolute garbage, PIC RELATED, it has a lot of issues, there's a weird blurry line in this photo and I don't know why. Adjusting shutter/aperture/ISO is either literally impossible or so obtuse I can't figure out how, and I wouldn't recommend it at all.
