True for anyone who has done photography for a couple years AND done at least some professional photography- the two are very different and both are important as a frame of reference
There are some genre's where it takes a lot longer to get what a client wants (high end fashion and real estate come to mind) but otherwise absolutely agree
Experience counts more than learning in most cases- the quicker you sell your work and the quicker you try and fail at different types of photography mean the quicker you can do those things competently. I think that's why most of /p/ is so bad- they're mostly people who do photography only as a hobby and have no goal or ambition to do much above that
BUT I also think there're a large number of people who will never be good at photography because most people aren't very creative and many more aren't even able to figure out the basics of exposure before they give up.
Photography requires a combination of skills and abilities but those abilities are all at a very shallow level so nothing about photography is inherently difficult
