Really stupid question here. I'd like to get into photography and eventually buy a nice DSLR. I currently own a Nikon J1 that was given to me by a family member.

I'm talking about stuff like aperture, ISO, white balance, etc, NOT composition. I can control these things manually, but, at least with the fiddling I've done with it so far, it seems like it wasn't really made to be able to easily change settings on the fly like you might with a full-bodied DSLR. I also have no idea whether the range of these settings on the J1 is particularly good/useful for someone to practice with.
