~HOWEVER~ it's looking like a lot of places along the path of totality will be seeing cloud cover. If the clouds are mid-upper atmosphere, and not too thick, you might be able to shoot through them and get some decent results. I only had a basic ND filter when Venus transited across the Sun, but there was just enough cloud cover to get the shot. And, the clouds added to the picture, I think.
