I'm actually really liking my current situation. Granted, I still live like a cheap-ass (and I like it that way) but it's been a lucrative scene and allows me to travel. My summers are a bit hectic with shows on most weekends, but currently that season is over and I'm not too concerned about income until next summer.
There are indeed very high end outdoor art shows as well, and they can be very hard to get into especially as a photographer. Selling $15k photos is not at all out of the question at those select dozen premium shows in the country. The current market I've seemed to work myself into results in a good mixture of sales volume and profit. I've shied away from lower price points (aside from bin prints which have such a profit margin that you're literally printing money) and moved up in size to move bigger pieces. I'm in a sweet spot to where my prices allow me to use a lab to produce the prints and frames, and I don't have to spend my days in a basement mixing chemicals unless I want to. As always, the goal is to stay ahead of the game. This plan is working currently but I'm aware it may not always work so ideas are always bouncing around my head.
I neither envy nor despise the extremely high-end guys. They do their thing and I do mine and there's room for all of us. Brookover is a VERY nice guy and his gallery is beautiful. 8 years ago it was all the typical color Tetons work you'd see in every gallery but after switching to Platinum prints his collectors have really found a new value in his work. It was a brilliant move for him.
