It makes sense I guess. They fly around and can hang out in direct sunlight with their eyes fully wide open, with no eyelids. A camera flash is nothing compared to endless direct pure sun exposure.
Honestly without flash it feels almost pointless to try to do macro photography at these levels of magnification unless I would crank the ISO to like 6400 or something.
