He often questions the limits of photography and isn't afraid to use "less serious" photo techniques i.e. digital manipulation. Photo manipulation has been going on since the invention of photography and digital manipulation is just the extension of it. Nothing new or "inauthentic" in fact photography itself is the manipulation of reality.
With Rhein II he was also pointing towards anthropocentrism, the desire of man to interfere with nature and doing whatever the fuck he. Ironically Gursky inverted this process and removed the human presence from a "natural" setting.
This photograph is compositionally and conceptually a masterpiece.
