-as anon said, dark frames (and the stacking process itself) remove some of the noise. The more sub-exposures, the less noise in the final image.
-M42 (the orion nebula) is a fucking bright object, it will look beautiful at 400 ISO. For other nebulae (like the horsead above) I have to shoot at 6400 ISO to even begin to see it.
I usually make 2 versions of my images, one for facebook with heavy noise reduction (more "clean" image), and one for myself and photography forums with little or no noise reduction (more stars visible but maybe less aesthetically pleasant)
