Jeff Wall and Stan Douglas- in general a lot of interesting photography comes out of Vancouver and the surrounding area. Early landscape photographers like Carleton Watkins (because that's when photography as a technical exercise peaked).
Most contemporary art photography is contrived trash that spends all of it's effort trying to prove to itself that it's not apeing classical painting. It's fundamentally conservative shit that's simply trying to leech off a dying mode of producing work. If a photo is lucky, it'll grace the walls of a Best Western or be used as a stock photo for model bedrooms at Ikea. If it's not, it'll just float around the internet with literally trillions of other technically sound but hackneyed photos of poetic still lifes or "candid" street shots.
I'm interested in artists that make me think about how I see the world. Most photography just wants to show me a picture of something interesting.
