F-mount stuff might have compatibility issues with electronic diaphragms or autofocus. Nikon is more 'forward' compatible than backward. Features like VR and the like mightn't work.
I amn't sure about Sony/Minolta - but I think it's similar. When the mechanical link AF swapped some compatibility was broken.
EF is simple enough - Any EF-mount lens (Apart from EFS and EFM) works on any EF mount camera. I.S and all. EF's backwards compatibility is crazy.
I've been taking pictures just to make the features like I.S and stuff actually work.
The only conclusion I can come to is that new gear is actually worth paying for. Especially Baby's first cheapest L lens. It's so much better than the 28-70 USM zoom I had it's not funny. Especially wide-open.
