Maybe it's just the combination of a lens that's both sharp wide open but also fast, so the subject in focus is standing out more against the blurred background. I don't know if the high microcontrast or whatever that some of you mention exists, I've heard the term plenty of times but never really seen a good example of what it actually looks like.
