We have some new patterns emerging.
The A7Rii was Sony's D800 (new breakthrough)
The A7Riii was Sony's D810 (refinement)
Right now D850 and A7Riii are trading blows as equals with their own advantages.
Nikon's next highres camera will be a refinement of the D850, whereas Sony's next highres camera will be a new breakthrough. They will probably trade blows again.
But they will follow each other like this every two years:
Sony refinement <-> Nikon breakthrough (D850)
2 years later
Nikon refinement <-> Sony breakthrough (Super highres sensor)
2 years later
Sony refinement <-> Nikon breakthrough (Full Frame mirrorless)
2 years later
Nikon refinement <-> Sony breakthrough
This will leave Canon in the dust with their 4 year snail pace.
