Part of my desire for reach is like I said, I can sometimes be over 120m away from the action and even with a crop on my 55-300 its nowhere near enough. the TC should help. Wish I could rent some of these to try out though haha. pic related is an example, getting caught down the other end of the field. Hockey is pretty quick relative to the field size (100yards long, 50 yards wide, plus a run off area and fencing) so I feel like I miss a lot of shots just due to the distance.
I use the 50-135 mainly cause I got a great deal on it (about 480usd) and its the sharpest lens I have. pic rel really reminds me how glad I am I moved to Pentax instead of staying on Nikon, would had to deal with all the bullshit as its gone mirrorless
