This is an extremely lazy edit, the only things I modified besides yellows are as shown in the basics. Most of the color change is simply for adjusting the color temp slider.
You have to be sure you manually focus on the stars, I find it easier to do this by using the live view screen and zooming in on an individual star and turning the focus ring until it looks the sharpest.
When I take my pictures, I expose to the right, meaning I allow as much light into the shot as I possibly can before it overexposes on the sky.
When you shoot, make sure your camera is set to save in RAW, color temperature adjustments and grain adjustments work significantly better when shooting in RAW format.
I don't like shooting for exposures longer than 15 seconds. At 20 seconds star trailing becomes obvious, it would make the milky way start to appear fuzzy regardless of focus.
