Sony just pushed a new paradigm shift for zoom lenses.
- No more heavy rotating inner barrels => Saves weight and barrel diameter.
- No more external zooming => Better weather sealing
- No more rotating lens elements => no more wobbling corners when you zoom in and our during video record
- No more physical hard-stopped zoom ring
This one will be controversial as it's a negative.
But on the positive side, you can now remote control your zoom functionality when the lens in on a drone or on a gimbal.
The Zoom "motor" is the same Magnetic levitation actuator that is used for their Autofocusing, so it makes no noise, it's fast, precise, repeatable, adjustable.
I have a suspicion the 24-70 F2,8 remake they are working on will be internally zooming as well.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it might just be the first ever 24-70 that is fully internally zoomed.
These will be a new class of premium zooms that are compact, despite being internally zooming.
