There was once a Pilot Town near the fort, Navy Cove, where a lot of local captains lived. They'd pilot other ships into Mobile Bay. Entering Mobile Bay without a pilot used to be a solid way of finding yourself stuck on a sandbar.
this lady's first name was "Alabama", that also used to be pretty common down there. It's really no different than folks naming their daughters after Virginia, of course.
