If you're using a manual, try using the digital zoom function to set focus, rather than focus peaking as that seems to have pretty low standards for sharp.
Also, obligatory terrible subject. You take good portraits, you should find some people. Print up some cheap plain paper "business cards" with an email, and offer to send people a copy after you take them. Just go ask at the park or somewhere you like the background. Easy way to get subjects.
