>>286335185mm f/1.8D is good, but I recently got this 85mm f/1.8G and it's amazing how hella sharp it is wide open. If you're not bokeh whoring, then the D is just as good stopped down, but the D was always nothing special wide open while the G is really really good. I have a D700 too by the way, are you me?
I also like the 28mm f/2.8 AI-s, it's a really good lens and I think it has a bit of a nice character to it too which I can't really explain. Unfortunately mine died due to oil on the aperture blades and I gave it to someone to keep if he could fix it. I'm waiting for another one to pop up on KEH so I can buy it.
The 50mm f/1.8G is really good too, I think it's the best 50mm Nikon has made. I'm a huge fan of this new series of f/1.8G primes Nikon is making and I've tried out the 28, 50, and 85 and I think they're all great.
That other lens on the far left in my photo is the 105mm f/2.5 AI-s. Everyone seems to love it and it's definitely a nice lens but I find the focal length kind of awkward, personally.
I don't really like zooms so I can't recommend any.
Also excuse the huge photo, but here's the ad picture which I printed. There's a blog I found with a bunch of cool old camera ads and stuff scanned in pretty high resolution. This one I photoshopped out most of the dust and tried to line up the two pages, I could probably try to clean up the seam in the middle and stuff too but I sort of like how you can tell it's an old magazine ad this way.
