I think the best approach for me is not to force photos or even be on the hunt. I try to relax, settle in the environment, and be receptive - that way I don't get caught in some tunnel vision fueled by a craving for a good photo and instead let them come to me. If I only take 1 or 2 photos, that's better than a hundred desperate crapshoots in my book.
50 is good for people shots or even shots of an interesting scene; it has a nice "even" quality compared to wide angle lenses which, to me, are really hard to use without getting a photo that's too energetic for my tastes.
Basically what I'm trying to say is that there is no intrinsically right lens. Don't give in to /p/'s dogmatism. Enjoy the process.
