https://www.dpreview.com/opinion/7031211310/roger-cicala-field-curvature-pt-2And it's not like high end manufacturers are immune. They all have stinkers.
Why would your images not look lifelike? Why do things look like they're on the same plane when they're not?
Because the exact field curvature of that lens, and how you focused it (on axis) didn't match the way human vision focuses on objects. The typical human eye is a terrible camera that has such extreme aberrations that only one small circle is ever really in focus and your brain paints in the rest using binocular vision as your eyes move around. Even the best lenses can't match this unless the photographer adjusts focus so it matches what his eyes see, not just what the contrast or phase detect computer sees as a sharp edge in its AF point array.
In other words: Specific gear can help you, but every brand has its shitty lenses and ultimately this comes down to a skill issue, noobs thinking autofocus will adjust the focus correctly when the plane of sharp focus is never perfectly flat. You need to adjust the depth of field so what you see in the OVF or EVF is lifelike, not just perfectly sharp in one tiny square. Relying on AF is rolling the dice with some lenses. Even this voigtlander.
