I am a watercolorist and when I started, I bought books, paints, brushes, papers, and tons of stuff just expecting to be able to make better work with better quality stuff. What I found out, and many artists do, is that more gear just makes you more prone to try to copy someone else's style and frustrates you because you feel forced to use all this gear. Less equipment forces you to develop your skills.
At some point you either quit (which is what most people that pick up a hobby do) or simplify and try to find enjoyment in the hobby. I still find myself falling into the cool paper trap but 99% of my paint gear fits in a 5x9 REI zipper bag. My photo gear is usually one zoom, a body, and a wireless remote TX/RX unit and Bolt flash.
