i don't like this idea of 'travel photography'. you go somewhere you don't know, somewhere that you have a pre-established image of - you already have photos in mind, ones that you've seen online, maybe. and you thinking of these photographs while you play out your character - "westerner in Japan" photographer. you went to Japan because you had this idea that the photos would be waiting for you to take, rather than for you to make something - make someone care about something they didn't already care about.
think of where you live instead. the routes you know well and ones you don't. the people, the culture, the specific issues and character of that place. who cares about that? that's you, that's your job as a photographer - to make someone care. you are fully equipped to tell the story of your town for you are part of it. you can make something unique to your own situation instead of taking the same damn shots that everyone takes when they go to Nippon.
