This is an interesting conversation. The way I'm seeing it Eggleston like many artists did something no one else had done before which is what modern art is all about. Whether by his own glory or networking or coincidence or divine intervention he changed the photography landscape and in this changed landscapes his photos don't hold up anymore. His own website is an example of particularly mediocre photographs you wouldn't look at twice on flickr or instagram. Few even of the well selected photographs appeal to me because I have no personal connection or interest in the time and space they capture. I get the red ceiling, it's very obvious, but I don't like it.
