The closer you get to a camera, the more distortion is noticable; the reason why distortion is less noticable on a 80mm camera is because the zoom forces you to stand back.
Your eyes also have distortion, point your finger towards your pupil and you will notice distortion when it is very close and how "thin" it looks like, but slowly moving your finger back creates less distortion.
