I use a 70-300mm Nikkor 4.5-6.3 with my D5500 and it's really good and they're pretty cheap. But, autofocus is a little off sometimes, the bokeh has some very slight doubling sometimes, and I get some chromatic aberration in high contrast photos, basically all the time.
All three issues can be seen in this photo. Looks like I slightly missed focus just behind the bird, the blurry puddles in the back have some noticeable vertical doubling, and the head has some really noticeable aberration.
It's a good lens but those issues do hold it back for me, just as a review. Keep in mind I got it used too and the camera, lenses, and bags I got reeked of cigarette smoke so who knows how well the owner too care of this stuff. Nikon owners.
Almost every photo I take with this lens is at 300mm, so I'm considering getting a 300mm prime, I don't think I'll miss the 70mm side very much. What do you guys think of telephoto primes? Ever feel held back by them? And any recommendations?
