Its a gig to gig life. The only way to survive is repeat clients and referrals from those clients, the best way I explain that is the truth I've never had an advertised job, its all word of mouth.
Your personality is more important than your product. Winning work must become your life, every hint of an opportunity for work or at least a useful contact must be attacked.
Needless to say its pretty damn taxing on mental health not having a week in/out paycheck, some weeks are great, others not so much. Give me another year or so and I think I might be pretty comfortable.
It is definitely possible to make a living, you just have to treat it like work. For photography your best bet is weddings and corporate events. Then you can try to branch into something you care about (fashion, food advertising etc)
