I would prefer to stay with the Sony brand for full feature compatibility but may consider other brand lenses if they had better performance or other advantages. If I could go longer in the zoom up to 300mm or more I would. I have seen some Tamron lenses that fit the bill up like the 18-400mm but the reviews aren't as good as the Sony. Seems like the Tamrons are more budget lenses with less sharpness and more chromatic aberration. Some Tamrons have better weather sealing then the Sony lens which doesn't seem to have any weather sealing. This would be a plus for me as the lens will be a travel, camping and hiking lens for me.
