A 1:1 magnification is 2 x focal length in bellows draw, so not always too bad.
It depends on what you consider practical... I think that using standard movements provides an excellent way to avoid using focus stacking, but often times it ends up being a sort of compromise when choosing what is and isn't in focus. For flatter subjects it is really great.
With enough bellows and a wide angle lens you can easily get to extreme magnifications. A 65mm lens with 500mm of bellows will get you over 6x magnification, but you would need to add 6 stops of exposure compensation...
