>>3430307Good question. I've no exact answer for that. I think it's down to image processor and buffer on the cameras for what you can get out of it. Also plain marketing. Canon, for instance, is selling pro camcorders now, so they maybe don't want digital cams to compete with them.
Noise appears to be even more complicated. Did a quick test. Top screen normal, bottom 2x digital teleconverter. Screens from video, no resizing, just jpeg compression to keep samples in tact. For my eyes it's at least even, if not even that 2x has better noise. But when watching video, noise on 2x is slightly more noticeable, especially in the shadows. If anything differences are not large.
