Is film really that good?

I get colorful pictures sometimes, but it's rare that camera decides that colors must be really different by itself, and if I push saturation too far, it just kinda starts eating into things I didn't intend or notice being colorful (like this sign post that now has patches or color all over it) and the whole thing sometimes falling apart. But I would have thought it's just my fault for adjusting it badly.
