Argento purposely sought the last Technicolor machine in the country and got the lab to keep operating just for his movie. He achieved one of the most visually stunning pictures in history, and technicolor was what allowed him to do that. Had he kept everything else the same and changed the stock, it wouldn't have looked that impressive.
